Jack’s probably only had two lots of front shoes on in his life, just before I got him. Never had shoes on behind. He cast a shoe on a fun ride a week after I got him, didn't miss it so I had the farrier come the next day to take off his remaining shoe, trim him and we've never missed them.
I have been exceptionally lucky in that he has never had any problems coping without shoes. I boot occasionally. The tracks where Jack lives in North Wales are very stony and he doesn't have any hard standing in his field at the moment so he's not conditioned for lots of work on stony ground. I use Old Macs G2s and haven't had any problems with them. I am very lucky never to have lost any riding time due to his feet, which is more than I can say about friends and acquaintances with shod horses who always seem to be waiting for the farrier to replace a lost shoe!
He's trimmed by my farrier every 4 weeks during the summer, falling back to 5/6 weeks in winter.
Jack is a 7 year old Welsh Section D who is owned by Sheryl McKenna.
Jack is not trimmed by Performance Barefoot but by a farier who has had no specific barefoot training and is not to our knowledge particularly interested in barefoot. However Jack and this farrier do a wonderful job of keeping Jacks hooves in shape. Jack proves that it is not just barefoot trimmers who create sound successful, performance hooves!
Fun rides are Jack and Sheryl’s favourite pastime. Along with Fari he has done one a week during September and October, on top of his usual RC activities and dressage lessons. He is always un-booted, and they like to jump what they can including hedges and once side by side with Sarah and Fari!
We can tell you that he is a lot of fun even though his brakes don’t really work!
