The horses in North Wales live along the lines suggested in Jamie Jackson’s book Paddock Paradise. They have limited access to grass but are encouraged to move by living around the perimeter of a 6 acre field on a track. The diagram below shows the environment the horses live in.
Each day the horses can choose which water source to drink from. They must also walk over abrasive surfaces to reach water. They can choose which route they take too. Offering opportunities to make choices creates a more interesting and stimulating environment. The horse also have logs and telegraph poles to navigate round or even jump over should they wish to get somewhere in a hurry. The sand area offers a different texture to roll on. These are the same type of opportunities that the feral horses choose in their environment, choices which make them move many miles per day and create strong, healthy robust hooves.
