This is probably the first question everyone asks and then they really can't believe it when you say NO! At a 30 mile endurance ride the farrier inspecting Jesta’s feet just could not work out how his hooves looked stronger and tougher after the ride. They blew him away and he went off puzzling over why he needed to shoe other endurance horses every three weeks because the shoe had worn out. In his mind metal just had to be far stronger than a hoof! The explanation is that nature is powerful. Hooves respond to wear stimulus and grow as much hoof as needed if given the opportunity. Once the shoes, which stop wear, are removed the hooves will respond with faster, stronger and thicker growth which is why crumbly hooves disappear and a beautiful tough hoof develops.
Will my horse feet wear away when I ride it barefoot on the road?
Jesta, with the cute ears, loves SMA the new tarmac which is so slippery for horses in metal shoes. He loves this so much that he usually asks politely if he can canter along it!
In the video Fari shows off the ‘no slip trotting and cantering down the road’ capabilities of a bare hoof!
