By April 2006 it was clear Fari’s hooves were becoming very affected by the spring grass growing on the five acre field. So we restricted him to the hard core area and then started creating all weather tracks with a number of different surfaces.
We started with a gravel track. Six inches of top soil was removed to the width of the widest Geotex Woven Membrane (15 foot). The membrane was laid in the trench and pea gravel with a diameter of no more than 14 millimetres was then added. The soil sides of the trench held the pea gravel in place.

Using a round pea gravel rather than a flat one is more expensive but flat types will compress and need topping up.

If we created a pea gravel area again we would create short walk through areas away from mud and food. The horses like to stand in the gravel when it is deep so they can rest their front hooves at an angle similar to hind hooves. Walking through it is beneficial too but it is not a necessity to have a long track as small areas work well too.
