Sarah had have of course been thinking about Morris and his lameness for most of the night. Dave said he had gone footy over the last week culminating with lameness in his left fore. We can’t quite believe our horse has got laminitis. Surely a young horse can’t go footy like this so quickly after being so sound on so many differing surfaces? Possibly he has an abscess brewing which if the case would get worse before it gets better. We may have to trailer down to pick him up at the weekend.

Morris is much better although still footy on stones. We believe he had a laminitic event which has been reduced by a few days of dry weather making the grass grow less strongly. Dave has been very supportive and we have agreed that he should now be stabled at night. This means he will eat his mineral and vitamin supplements and have a much reduced grass intake. It will be fascinating to see if he returns to his previous barefoot performance and how long it takes. Even we didn’t think the spring grass could have that much effect on horses hooves until now. It leaves us wondering how many young horses are shod because of low level laminitic events.

We got a call today about Morris. Sarah’s heart sank at first as she thought his lameness had reoccurred but it was just to say that they were concerned that he had been slow and had not made the progress they would have wanted. We cannot say what a relief that was, if he had continued to be footy and lame then Sarah might have abandoned barefoot, thrown in the towel and admitted defeat. Now we are happy as Larry, though Sarah’s husband is upset because he thinks we have a remedial horse! Sarah will go to see how remedial tomorrow!
Could this hoof be so quickly and so substantially affected by our UK grass?
