Making a Paddock Paradise 3
The pea gravel track was quite expensive to complete so we looked for a cheaper alternative to continue the track in the opposite direction on the other side of the original hard core area. We also wanted to create another haylage point at the top of the pea gravel track so that the horses would have to move in search of forage. We laid the same Geotex membrane on the ground with no preparation and spread an even layer of road planings on top to a depth of around 6 inches. This has provided an excellent well draining, robust and abrasive surface which cost a fraction of both the pea gravel and hard core area to create.

Road planings can be a hard and unforgiving surface for some horses. Ideally you should give them an alternative surface to walk on such as grass, soil, bark or pea gravel. One idea would be to create a narrow pea gravel or bark track down one side so horses have a choice of surface
